ATM Security: The Blind Spots Most Banks Don't Monitor

Updated: Jul 29

Standalone ATM kiosks are, structurally, one of the least supervised parts of a bank's physical footprint. No teller present, no manager on-site, often no natural foot traffic outside of transaction hours — and yet they hold cash and process transactions around the clock. Most ATM security programs rely on a camera and a lock, and stop there.

The gaps that actually matter:

Tampering detection. Card skimmers and camera overlays are usually installed and removed quickly, often during low-footfall hours. A camera that records but isn't actively monitored doesn't catch this in time to prevent fraud — it only helps identify what happened after customers have already reported unauthorized transactions.

Loitering patterns. A single person loitering near an ATM briefly is normal. The same pattern repeated across days, or multiple people rotating through a "lookout" pattern, is a signal that a simple camera system won't flag on its own — it takes either a monitored feed or an AI system trained to notice repetition.

Physical security of the kiosk itself. Lighting failures, door lock malfunctions, and damaged CCTV housings are often only discovered when someone happens to notice — which, for an unattended kiosk, can be days after the fault appeared.

After-hours accessibility. Kiosks in isolated locations or with 24-hour access carry a different risk profile at 2 AM than at 2 PM, and a patrol schedule that doesn't account for this is treating every hour as equally low-risk when it isn't.

What closes these gaps in practice:

A scheduled physical check — not just a passive camera — at a frequency matched to the ATM's footfall and location risk, checking specifically for tampering signs, functioning lighting, and equipment status. Where AI-enabled camera monitoring is deployed, anomaly detection (unusual loitering duration, repeated visits, obstruction of the camera itself) can flag a developing pattern before it becomes a fraud incident, giving the bank a chance to intervene rather than only investigate afterward.

Durgashtra's ATM security protocol, part of its broader bank and financial institution security service, builds a defined patrol and inspection schedule into every deployment, rather than treating an ATM kiosk as a fit-and-forget installation.

Durgashtra Private Limited provides scheduled patrol, physical inspection, and AI-enabled surveillance coverage for standalone ATM kiosks and bank branch ATM areas.
