Perimeter Security for Manufacturing Plants: A Layered Approach

Ask most plant managers what "perimeter security" means and they'll point to the boundary wall and the main gate. That's one layer. A wall only stops what it can physically stop, and a gate only controls what walks through it during the hours someone is watching it.
Industrial perimeter security works better as a set of layers, each covering the gaps the others leave open.
Layer 1 — Physical barriers. Boundary walls, fencing, and controlled gates are the baseline. They deter casual intrusion and channel legitimate traffic through defined points. They do nothing about someone who climbs, cuts, or simply walks around at a point the wall doesn't cover — which, on large industrial sites with irregular boundaries, is more common than owners assume.
Layer 2 — Human patrol. Static guards at gates handle entry/exit control well but can't see the rest of the boundary. Mobile patrols — on foot or by vehicle, on a randomized rather than predictable schedule — cover the stretches between fixed posts and make the site harder to "read" for anyone studying patterns before attempting a breach.
Layer 3 — Camera coverage. Fixed and PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras at gates, along fence lines, and at loading docks give you a recorded account of who came and went, and let a control room spot movement in real time rather than relying on a patrol happening to be in the right place.
Layer 4 — Aerial and technology-based surveillance. This is where most factories are under-covered. A 10- or 20-acre site has stretches of boundary, storage yards, and rooftop access points that ground-level cameras and patrols simply can't watch continuously. Layer 5 — Access control and visitor management. None of these layers is sufficient alone. A wall without patrols is just an obstacle to climb over unseen. Cameras without a monitored control room are just storage for footage nobody watches until after an incident.
