R&D in Security Technology: Why a Security Company Builds Its Own Equipment

It's a fair question to ask: why would a company whose core service is trained manpower and physical security also invest in research and development of its own cameras, drones, and radar systems, rather than simply buying and reselling existing products? The answer says something about how the security industry's needs and the technology industry's product cycles don't always line up well.
The mismatch between generic technology products and specific security needs.
