Corporate access control systems — card readers, biometric scanners, PIN pads — create a reassuring sense that access is tightly controlled. In practice, the technology is only as effective as the discipline around how it's actually used, and the single most common way these systems fail has nothing to do with the technology itself: tailgating.
What tailgating actually is, and why it's so common. Tailgating is simply one person using their valid access to open a door, and a second person following through behind them without independently authenticating — often without any bad intent on either person's part. It's socially awkward to challenge a colleague or a visitor following closely behind you, which is exactly why tailgating happens so routinely, even in offices with sophisticated access control technology.
Why sophisticated access technology doesn't solve tailgating on its own. A workplace culture that normalizes challenging tailgating politely — training staff that it's appropriate and expected to ask an unfamiliar person following them to badge in independently, removing the social awkwardness that otherwise discourages this.
Security personnel stationed at higher-risk internal access points, providing a human check that camera systems and employee vigilance alone might miss.
Regular access audits — reviewing who has access to what, ensuring credentials match current roles, and removing access that's no longer needed.
Why this is worth addressing directly rather than assuming the technology handles it. Many corporate security incidents involving unauthorized internal access trace back to tailgating rather than a failure of the access control technology itself. The fix is a combination of physical design, technology, and workplace culture — not a more expensive card reader.
